Prof. WANG attended the 3rd Conference on Teaching and Learning Politics, International Relations and European Studies – EuroTLC, Charles University in Prague, 31 May 2018 - 1 June 2018

The Faculty of Social Sciences at the Charles University in Prague hosted the 3rd European Teaching and Learning Conference, which is jointly organized by BISA, ECPR, PSA and UACES.

The 3rd edition of our European Conference on Teaching and Learning Politics, International Relations and European Studies continues the tradition of practicing what we preach: enough room for exchange, reflection, and deliberation; interactive sessions that provoke, challenge, and give ideas; actively experience learning.

Prof. WANG attended the forum and delivered a speech entitled “Cultural Studies on European Integration: Cultural Dimension as a New Perspective to Teach the European Union”. His paper was highly appreciated by the audience at the conference.

The Abstract of the paper is as follows:

European integration is not only a process of economic and political integration, but also a social and cultural one. From the beginning of the European integration process, culture as a field has been marginalized by those who determine priorities at the European level as well as by a majority of academic studies about European integration. The EU now faces a multitude of challenges both internally and externally. In recent years, interest in cultural dimension of European integration has been developed. Scholars argue that a cultural dimension should be added to political, economic and social European integration. A “culturally deficit project of integration” is fragile and cannot go much farther as the European integration shows. This paper probes into the theoretical basis on which a course for MA students, ‘Cultural Studies on European Integration’, can be founded and illustrates what possible topics could be included in the teaching, under the theoretical framework of the interrelationship between culture and integration.

Key words: EU; culture; European studies
