Summary of the Project: The EU now faces a multitude of challenges both internally and externally. The European solidarity is weakened and EU’s image is damaged. Questions about the sustainability of EU abound. In recent years, interest in cultural dimension of European integration has been developed. Scholars argue that a cultural dimension should be added to political, economic and social European integration. A "culturally deficit project of integration" is fragile and cannot go much farther as the European integration shows. In light of current EU crisis and its future development, particular attention should be paid to culture. The Chair proposal will investigate from the cultural perspective the future of EU by addressing how to strengthen European Solidarity through intercultural dialogue and how to reshape EU's image through cultural diplomacy. New questions regarding the EU, such as what intercultural dialogue is; what cultural diplomacy is, how it can help EU reshape its image, will be examined. This is the evidence of academic added value and promotion of European Union studies. The proposal is also aimed at deepening teaching of European Union Studies from a cultural perspective. The applicant has developed an innovative course "Cultural Studies on European Integration" and made it the Jean Monnet teaching module (2011-2014). Based on the successful accomplishment of the module, the applicant is carrying out an Erasmus+ network programme, which is a joint application between the applicant and five different university professors in Europe. During the lifetime of the proposal, three online courses will be constructed so that any student can benefit from them. Two books centering on intercultural dialogue and cultural diplomacy of the EU will be produced, three academic papers will be published, and three seminars will be held. An evaluation of EU’s reshaped image will be conducted around Asian-Pacific region, so that European decision-makers can exploit the research results.
